CHRISTINE LU is Director of Communications for Impact Entrepreneurship Group impact.org Impact is Canada’s largest non-profit, student-run organization all about encouraging the entrepreneurial spirit of youth in Canada. Since 2004, Impact’s programs have reach over 100 000 young people each year.

YUE LIU is a member of the Communications team for the Impact Entrepreneurship Group. Yue was a leader of one of the participating teams of the 2009 Impact Microcredit Competition when she was in high school earlier this year.

ADITYA SHAH, is Impact Alumnus and co-founder of a startup software company called EightyTwenty Groupwww.eightytwentygroup.com, He’s already gained work experience consulting at Deloitte, and product management positions at Bell Canada and Research in Motion, He is an engineering grad of the University of Waterloo, and was actively involved in Impact Group.

HERKY CUTLER is the Career Buzz youth careers correspondent based in Twin Butte, Alberta. He was recently involved in a study focusing on Gen Y and employers, what they want and what they think of each other.

A Recipe for Leadership

Welcome.  There are two things I wish to do over the coming weeks.  First, share with you my view of leadership, what I’ve learned from my experience in education.  Secondly, and most important I wish to be guided by your feedback. What is it that interests you, your thoughts and your experiences on the matter?

Leadership…easier said than done.  Believe it or not, it is a topic that has attracted and fascinated me since the age of 6.  Don’t get me wrong.  I was not a 6 year old who aspired to be a leader or understood at the time what it was that fascinated me.  Only from living my life and defining what it is that floats my boat did I come to the awareness that it was through this thing called leadership that I related to the world and others.

The Dream Career

Six years ago I had an interview with the Education Manager of my company and she asked me what my five year goal was.  I answered simply “to have your position.”  At the time I was trying to exude confidence and also felt like I should add a little humour to my interview, but I never realized how saying something out loud could impact the rest of my career or my life.

In a year and a half I became Senior Instructor then one cold January day in 2007 my dream started to become a very scary reality.  The existing Education Manager was moving to the US and I could apply for her job.  My first thought was how can I take on a role within a global skin care company with only two years of experience? My second thought was I need to jump into this and believe in myself and in the support others will give me.

Jenny was a psychiatric nurse in England who decided to become a travel guide in Africa. I met her when I traveled around East Africa. At a campsite in Malawi, by chance I met two guys on a freestyle cycle tour from Cape Town to Cairo. What I thought I was doing in Africa was taking a break from the isolation of my home-based consulting practice, and exploring a part of the world I’d always been interested in. From a career perspective, that’s not what I was doing at all…
